Spelunky creator, Derek Yu recently announced plans to release Spelunky 2 this year. In a twitter post the indie-developer stated he was putting all his efforts into a 2020 release date:
It’s been almost three years since Spelunky 2 was first announced during PlayStation’s 2017 Paris Games Week. Yu confirmed last August that although development was going well, the game was “demanding more time.”
Various updates entailing features and showing off screenshots have been released over the last year. In March, Yu shed light on a deathmatch mode returning from the original game. He also described a need to make each run-through feel like a “personalized adventure.”
@strotchy and I are on both projects and at some point we knew we'd have to focus on one to finish it off before going back to the other. Well, that time has come and we're going all in on #Spelunky2 to release it this year! We'll holler when we know exactly when.

The original Spelunky was first released in 2008 and the HD-reworking of the game came out in 2012. It was critically acclaimed, the original Xbox 360 edition receiving a score of 87 on Metacritic. Its influence on the indie games throughout the 2010s was colossal, and it helped massively in shaping the modern rogue-like genre. It’s been a long wait for a sequel, but it looks like it could be over soon.
